Barrington Middle School BMS Connected Learning Newsletter 10.29.2018 The BMS Learning Community is Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Succeed! Upcoming Events: (Note: Please review the dates as dates are subjected to change due to a number of factors from one newsletter to the next).
Note from Dr. Anderson: This week David Flood will be meeting with our BMS students. At the end of last year, a parent sent me an email encouraging me to take a look at his short video clip. Instantly, we knew we had to have David come to our middle school and speak to our students about dignity and respect. I encourage you to view the attached video link with your child as a preview for Wednesday’s assembly: http://davidjflood.com/, BMS Spotlight on Learning: This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Ms. Danielle Teoli. Through a Spotlight recommendation from Mr. Jeff Blanchett, the math curriculum chair, Ms. Teoli has demonstrated that she is doing a fantastic job teaching Grade 8 Math as well as Algebra. Great work Ms. Teoli! BMS News you can Use: BMS Building Update: The new building construction is well underway. To help with communication, each week I have been releasing the BMS Building Project Blog. You can access the blog by visiting the BMS Building Project Homepage or the direct link to the BMS Building Project Blog. In addition, each Tuesday morning we will have a student volunteer give updates to our student body during morning announcements. Student Youtube Access: On November 1, 2018, students at Barrington Middle School will no longer be able to access the Youtube website. This shift in practice will greatly reduce students’ abilities to search inappropriate videos (non school related content). With that said, Barrington Middle School teachers will be asked to create an Edpuzzle account during the month of October. Edpuzzle will allow teachers to post content/curriculum specific Youtube videos to the platform, and students will be able to access only those videos by accessing their teachers Edpuzzle accounts. Gently Used Sports Equipment: The Barrington High School Hockey Team is currently running a fundraiser to help support their team through a used sports equipment sale. The team is seeking used sports equipment from our community to include in their sale. If you have any used equipment, and would like to donate it, please consider donating to this very important cause. There is a collection box placed in our school’s main office. BMS Gaming NIght: The entry fee is $5 per student. This will allow students to play various games mentioned above. In addition to playing these games we will run tournaments that will cost between $3 or $5 to enter. Pizza, soda and some candy will be available to purchase. It is suggested each student bring between $10 and $20. If you would like to chaperone this event, please email Mario Correia at [email protected]. Big Focus Updates

Note from Dr. Anderson This week is a special week for BMS. Students will be participating in our annual BMS Spirit Week! In particular, this Wednesday, we encourage all members of our learning community to proudly wear the color orange for Unity Day. Wednesday is an opportunity where all members of our school family can stand together and show support for one another through kindness, acceptance, and inclusion, no matter of race, religion, ability, and/or orientation. Wearing orange is only the first step in showing and standing for unity. We need to remind ourselves that every day we need to show unity through our words and actions. We need to stand up for those who are being singled out our targeted. And, we all need to have high expectations for ourselves, and one another, not to ever use words or language that is meant to degrade, ridicule, or spread hate. Lastly, if any member of our learning community hears or sees someone in our community not being safe, supported, or cared for (especially by the above mentioned types of words or language) we expect that you be an upstander and inform your trusted adult. Over the next two weeks, culminating with David Flood’s presentation, we will be working hard to educate our students on the importance of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Please stay tuned for more information. Thank you for all working hard to make BMS a safe place for all of our students. BMS Spotlight on Learning This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mr. Peter Blasi. Last week, Mr. Blasi facilitated a “blind taste test” with his 7th grade Scientists. Students were interested in comparing the taste of name brand products against their store brand counterparts. Students were excited and enthusiastic to have various teachers come in and participate. Well done Mr. Blasi! We would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Coach Gunness and our Middle School Cross Country Team. The Boys and Girls teams swept all races at the Eastern Championship. Great work team! Best of luck to you in the States. BMS News you can Use BMS Building Update: The new building construction is well underway. BMS Gaming Night: The Computer Club Gaming Night is a fun night where friends can get together and enjoy a night of all variety of gaming! The High School Computer Club pools together our video game consoles and games for everyone to enjoy! Our games are all middle-schooler-friendly, ranging from Mario Kart to Super Smash Bros to League of Legends to Just Dance. This year we are excited to hold a Middle School gaming night at Barrington High School. This will occur during the evening of November 2nd. We are asking students to enter BHS through the main entrance. The event will occur in the 100’s corridor. We will have high school student volunteers directing participants to the location of the gaming event. The Gaming night will run from 6pm to 9pm. The entry fee is $5 per student. Teachable Moment: Chromebook Care: As you are aware, students at Barrington Middle School have been issued a Chromebook device to be used as a tool to assist with their learning. Throughout the year, our STAT (Student Technology Assistant Team) processes a number of Chromebooks due to breakages. This is a gentle reminder that Chromebooks should be in their cases at all times. The cases are provided to help reduce the number of broken Chromebooks. In addition, it is always recommended not to keep any items between the screen and keys of Chromebooks. Inadvertently screens are often closed in a hurry and the object left between the screen and keys can cause serious damage to the device. Community Information:

Note from Dr. Anderson As the Principal of Barrington Middle School, there are a number of exciting opportunities that I am grateful to be apart of. One of these opportunities allows me to tour our new learning community once a week. Every time I visit, I am amazed at the overall progress and seeing/appreciating construction from a first hand account. Just today, I was on the 3rd floor and they have begun priming/painting some of the classrooms. It truly is an awesome experience to witness first hand. BMS Spotlight on Learning This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Ms. Marlene Prichard. Last week, Ms. Prichard and her 8th grade students participated in the first ever “BMS Cookie Challenge.” Student cooking teams had the choice of what type of cookies to bake and then invited various teachers in to judge. Students were very excited to share their baked goods with their teachers and administrators. Great work Ms. Prichard. Note from Dr. Anderson Mrs. Bulk and I would like to thank Ms. McCauley, Mrs. Poirier, and Ms. Sleboda for organizing the “Principal/Assistant Principal Thank You Note” table during lunch the other day for Principal/Assistant Principal Appreciation Month. We would also like to thank all of the teachers and students who took the time out of their day to craft a note. We can not express how much this gesture and the notes meant to us. We truly love what we do and love working with all of you!
