Please consider completing the Family SurveyWork Survey. We do understand it does take time to complete, however, your feedback is invaluable to our school. As a School Improvement Team, we analyze the results of the student survey, faculty survey, and family survey and create action steps/plans to help improve the educational experience and climate here at BMS. To date, we have had 11% of our families complete the survey. This year, our goal is to have at least a 50% completion rate. Thank you in advance for considering this request. Please complete the survey here: surveys.panoramaed.com/ride. The access code is 01108family. BMS Building Update: The new building construction is well underway! Each week I will be sending out a blog previewing construction for the week. Please see a link to our BMS Building Project and BMS Building Project Blog below: BMS Building Construction Additional Notes:
BMS Parent Volunteer Opportunity: We need your help on March 2nd, 9:00-11:00 am. Students in Aqua Cluster have been working for several months on researching SDG (Sustainable Development Goals). These goals represent world wide issues which are hoped to be resolved in the near future. Students have been working on community service goals and are ready to "pitch" their ideas. The idea is for students to get some valuable insight from other people about how they could go about completing their goal. Job of the Volunteers:
RISS Student Survey: The Barrington Public School System has received a grant from the RI Dept. of Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (RI BHDDH), to continue strengthening Barrington’s community capacity to address youth substance abuse. A requirement of this grant is that the Barrington Public Schools collects survey information about substance use attitudes and behaviors from middle school students. Please see the linked letter for more information regarding the survey. (RISS Student Survey Parent Letter). If you do not want your child to participate in the survey, please fill out the bottom portion of the RISS Student Survey Parent Letter and return the form by Friday, March 2, 2018. If you have any questions regarding the survey, please contact Erica Bulk, Assistant Principal at 401-247-3160 or [email protected]. Thank you for helping us collect this needed information. 2017 - 2018 Family SurveyWorks Survey [Due March 30th]: Families have until the end of March, 2018, to complete the Family SurveyWork Data. Currently we have had only 11% of our families complete the survey. Our goal is to have at least 50% of our families to complete the survey by March 30, 2018. Please complete the survey here: surveys.panoramaed.com/ride. The access code is 01108family. 2016 - 2017 Family and Student SurveyWork Samples: Want to learn more about our Student and Parent data? Please click the below link for access to the 2016 - 2017 SurveyWork results as well as a few samples from both family and student data. Lynn Lyons is a licensed social worker and psychotherapist. She travels globally as a speaker and trainer on the subject of anxiety, its role in families, and the need for a preventative approach at home and in schools. In this presentation, Lynn will focus on how to interrupt the most common anxiety and depression enhancing patterns – including reassurance, accommodation, avoidance, and three cognitive habits. She'll explain how to instead adopt a process-based “umbrella approach” that changes both the child and adults’ ingrained patterns of thinking and behaving. “A Day Without Hate” The BHS Chain Reaction Club is organizing our annual “A Day Without Hate” on Friday, March 23, 2018. This day will be an incredible opportunity for every member of our community to come together to say that we will not tolerate violence or hate, and we will reach out to friends and acquaintances and say, "We're all in this together." One of the hallmarks of DWOH are the "Peace Posters." We transform the school environment by covering the building with posters with messages of unity, respect and nonviolence. We also invite everyone to wear white, the color of peace, on A Day Without Hate. This year we want the entire district to be involved! On Thursday, March 22, the night before A Day Without Hate, all Barrington students, families and employees are invited to a Peace Poster Party in the BHS cafeteria from 6PM - 8PM. We will make posters to either hang up in the high school hallways, or bring back to their schools to hang the next morning. Vaping Presentation for Families: Barrington Middle School and the PTO are planning a vaping presentation for later on in March (March 27, 2018 from 7:00pm - 8:30pm in the BMS Auditorium). We are encouraging parents to come to this presentation with their children. We believe the presentation would be appropriate for families of students in grades 5 through 12. In addition to the family presentation, students will also participate in a Town Hall style presentation during the day. Time to order your yearbook! Two ordering options:

Note from Dr. Anderson: Mrs. Bulk and I would like to wish you a happy New Year! 2018 is going to be an exciting school year as we will begin construction of our new middle school. Over the last couple of weeks, I have been fielding questions about the project, timelines, etc. I encourage you to visit the New Middle School Project homepage (https://www.bmsproject.org) located on the district’s page. Please see some highlights below:
In our upcoming parent newsletters we will regularly highlight updates and important information pertaining to the project. BMS News: Tips from the BMS Office: At times, students need to be dismissed from school for a variety of reasons. If you know in advance that your child will be dismissed early from school, please have your child drop a note off at the main office prior to homeroom stating the time your child will be dismissed and who will be picking up your child. Barrington Health Curriculum: As an important part of our health curriculum revision, the health teachers request your feedback on the Barrington Health Curriculum. If you would like to provide input, please complete the survey by January 15, 2018: http://bit.ly/2pdRSlw Variety Show: For the past several years, students at BMS have participated in our annual variety show. Student talent in the past consisted of singing, dancing, sketch comedy, gymnastics, and martial arts among other acts. Auditions for this year’s show will be January 16th and January 18th. Students can sign up in the main office. BMS Family Book Club: There is still time to sign up for the BMS Family Book Club on January 24, 2018 from 6:30pm - 7:30pm. We will be reading and discussing, Drowned City: Hurricane Katrina & New Orleans written and illustrated by Don Brown. You may sign up with the following link: goo.gl/utTBCG Parent Teacher Meetings: At BMS, we value our partnership with our families. In order to optimize the parent teacher meeting, BMS has developed meeting norms, roles and responsibilities. Our hope is that by adopting these norms, roles, and responsibilities, we will be able to effectively meet our meeting objectives in a timely manner. Please see a link to these norms. In addition, we will be posting the norms in each of our conference rooms. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ADuVvQaOxKvZXdYHrR3ZspXNlv2Ns5WEtXD1v71aXXU/edit?usp=sharing Barrington Middle School BMS Newsletter 12.18.2017 The BMS Learning Community is Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Succeed! Upcoming Events:
Note from Dr. Anderson: We have noticed over the past few weeks, more and more students coming to school after 7:45 am. Students are required to be in their homeroom seats by 7:45 am. We are aware that our bike ridership has substantially decreased with the change in temperature. Over the past few weeks we had only a dozen of bikes, where as in warmer weather, we have anywhere from 250 to 300 bikes on a daily basis. What this means is that we have significantly more cars dropping off in the morning. We ask cars to pull all the way forward in the green cone zone prior to students exiting the car. Pulling forward the extra few feet greatly reduces the back up on Middle Highway. In addition, this is a reminder that in order for students to participate in after-school events, they have to be in their homeroom seats by 7:45 am. Please feel free to contact either Mrs. Bulk or myself if you have any questions ([email protected] or [email protected]). Procedures for Students Staying after School: As we are transitioning into the winter months, there are more and more students staying after school. Safety and security are our number one priority. At no time should a student be just “hanging out” after school. We encourage you to review these points with your child:

Note from Dr. Anderson Mrs. Bulk and I would like to encourage parents to speak with their children about social media use. Increasingly parents and students report that some students are sending and receiving inappropriate (and sometimes explicit) images/videos over social media outside of school. This type of photo share is commonly known as “sexting.” It is important to note that these types of social media are blocked at the middle school and on the Chromebooks; however students can access through their personal cell phones data carriers. Many students who use the popular social media app “SnapChat” believe the image “goes away” in 10 seconds. However the individual receiving the snapchat can either screenshot or video record the image, making a permanent copy which they can share. Snapchapt is intended for individuals over the age of 13. The disclaimer agreement states that "SnapChat" owns 100% of all images/content that is shared over their app. In fact, social media apps can be subpoenaed due to individuals sending and receiving illegal images. For more information on “sexting,” please see the following link: http://kidshealth.org/en/parents/2011-sexting.html#. For additional information on supporting your child in the digital world please see the following link: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ as well as this resource on social media and children under 18 https://www.commonsensemedia.org/social-media. If your child receives an inappropriate image, do not to delete it. Notify local authorities immediately. In addition, please feel free to contact either Mrs. Bulk or me if you have any questions. For a quick lapse in judgment, there can be long-lasting and, sometimes, irreversible consequences for sending and receiving such images. Hackathon The 2017 BMS Hackathon event provided faculty, students, parents, community members, and administrators with an opportunity to see deeper learning at Barrington Middle School. Working with both Northeastern University and Highlander Institute colleagues, the faculty was supported in the design and feedback process. The focus was on a cohort of teachers creating or re-vamping project-based learning in their curriculum. Presenters and participants followed a simple protocol:
BMS Connected Learning Podcast In an effort to communicate broadly, we are launching an episodic podcast hosted by me, Dr. Anderson. The BMS Connected Learning podcast includes a Principal's Update, Spotlight on Learning, News You Can Use, and Teachable Moment segments. The series will be available on Apple iTunes, Google Play, and Stitcher. By subscribing, you can listen to these brief episodes as they go live on your mobile device or other connected device. Check out our first episode: Episode 1 of the BMS Connected Learning podcast. BMS Buddies Program: The BMS Buddies program pairs-up and mentors students at the middle school in the areas of social interaction, and development. The “peer-buddy,” the individual who will serve as a mentor, and the “friend,” the person receiving the support, will develop a school-based friendship. The individuals will support and interact with each other during school-sponsored, sanctioned events. Examples include:
Once per month, the buddies and their friend will have lunch together in the “BMS Buddies Cafe,” which will be in the Presentation Room. The time and support the students will provide will absolutely make our school a better place, help us reduce bullying, and provide students with new social opportunities that were not available to them prior. If your child is interested, and has not yet already done so, please have them check their school email from a message from me (Dr. Anderson) where they will find the application link, or the students may fill out an application in the office. All applications must be received by December 1st. BMS Peer Tutoring Program: The Peer Tutoring program will be available after school to students from 2:15-3:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the BMS Presentation Room. Students may receive help in the core subject areas and or in a foreign language. Students may also receive help in
Please contact Mr. Kearns ([email protected]) if you have any questions about the tutoring program. Eraser Challenge: There is an Internet challenge that began months ago nationally, that we are now seeing in our school. This challenge involves children rubbing their skin with an eraser as hard as they can while reciting the alphabet or other phrases. The rubbing causes burns and skin abrasions, which could become infected. A Today article provides more details regarding the ¨eraser challenge¨. A few students have visited the nurse, due to self-inflicted eraser burns on their wrists. We have educated the children about the dangers of this challenge and wanted to make you aware of this recent trend. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Vaping: It has come to our attention that Vaping is becoming a topic of concern regarding our middle school students. As this trend is occurring across the country with middle and high school level aged students, Mrs. Bulk and I feel that it is important that we provide you with some information regarding "Vaping". Vaping Information for Parents. Later on, in the school year, PTO and BMS are planning to have a guest presenter on the topic of "Vaping" where we will be inviting parents and their children to attend together. Please review the content and feel free to contact our Student Assistance Counselor, Ms. Katie Hamel ([email protected]), or me if you have any questions. |
