BMS Connected Learning Newsletter 2.25.2019 The BMS Learning Community is Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Succeed! Upcoming Events: (Note: Please review the dates as dates are subjected to change due to a number of factors from one newsletter to the next).
Note from Dr. Anderson: Mrs. Bulk and I would like to welcome everyone back from winter break. We hope everyone had a restful and relaxing vacation. During the months of February/March, we have a few different opportunities for families to connect with BMS. We encourage parents to take part in our Family Book Club, attend our PTO meeting, have lunch with the Principal, or participate in our Parent Deeper Learning visit scheduled for later on this month. At BMS we value our home to school partnerships. BMS Spotlight on Learning: This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Van Leer and Ms. Mento for their leadership in this year’s variety show. The week before break, we had nearly 14 acts perform in front of friends and family, as well as the entire student body. The students did an amazing job showcasing their talents. Great work students, Mrs. Van Leer, and Ms. Mento! Well done! This week we would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Ms. Hamel, Mrs. Polando, and Ms. Scanlon and their 8th Grade Students. During the month of January, with Mrs. Hamel's assistance, students from Ms. Scanlon's 8th grade Health classes collaborated with students from Mrs. Polando's 8th grade Entrepreneurship classes to produce videos for submission into the East Bay Regional Coalition's Mental Health Awareness Video Contest. Five videos were selected for submission and the video Titled The 5 Health Habits was selected as the winner. Students involved in the winning video were: Mia LeRoux, Kseniia Skosyrskaia, Max Bleakney, Nolan Gaus, Nathan Rego, & Shane Pilson. The school will receive a $500.00 prize which will be used to purchase instructional resources for the MS Health and Entrepreneurship classes. BMS News you can Use: BMS Building Update: The new building construction is well underway. To help with communication, each week I have been releasing the BMS Building Project Blog. You can access the blog by visiting the BMS Building Project Homepage or the direct link to the BMS Building Project Blog. In addition, each Tuesday morning we will have a student volunteer give updates to our student body during morning announcements. Message from Eastbay Lacrosse: East Bay Lacrosse offers girls and boys programs for players in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Although certain teams have closed registration or are wait listing due to reaching capacity (Girls 3/4 and Boys 1/2 are closed), the League is actively seeking players to register, particularly for the Boys 5/6 and 7/8 teams. If you would like to learn more or to register, please visit www.eastbaylax.org.

Completed forms may be returned to the school office. BMS Family Book Club: We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a BMS Community Book Club on February 26, 2019 in the BMS library! Please join us for a very special BMS Community Book Club. We will be discussing, Breakout, by Kate Messner. The story revolves around a group of middle-school friends in Wolf Creek who are asked to contribute to their Community Time Capsule Project during summer vacation. Simple enough, right? Until two inmates escape from the town’s maximum-security prison. Told creatively through letters, poems, text messages, news stories, comics, and more collected by the main character, Nora, this scrapbook-style story captures a rich and layered portrait of Wolf Creek for generations to come. In this spirit, we invite all book club participants who are interested, the opportunity to become curators in creating a BMS Time Capsule. This project will capture and preserve the history and spirit of BMS as we know it long after the building is gone, but through our efforts, not forgotten. We look forward to having you join us on this exciting journey! Note from Dr. Anderson: This past week our HMS and BMS PTO’s teamed up to sponsor a showing of Screenagers. We had nearly 100 people in the audience. Screenagers presents an opportunity for families to discuss appropriate uses of technology. I encourage you to view the info/reviews on commonsense media. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/screenagers In addition, I encourage you to visit Screenagers homepage https://www.screenagersmovie.com/ for additional information and helpful parent guides. Thank you HMS/BMS PTO for bringing this opportunity to BMS. BMS Spotlight on Learning: This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on our Boy’s Basketball Team for making it to the finals! This past Friday, the Boy’s Basketball Team, Coached by Coach St. Vincent and Coach Raffa, played against Park View from Cranston. Our team played hard and with heart and fell short at the final minutes. Throughout the season, you made our school proud. Great season team! This week, we would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Oswald, Mrs. Polando, Mrs. Scanlon, and Mr. Naff for chaperoning the BMS Fan Bus. Thank you for your time and support to our BMS Students. Because of you, we were able to provide our students with a fan bus to support the team. Principal Coffee Hour: I would like to invite you to this month’s Principal Coffee Hour on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 from 7:30 am to 8:30 am in our school’s presentation room. Principal’s Coffee Hour provides families an opportunity to meet with me to discuss a number of school related topics. The first half hour I will have a topic that I will prepare to discuss, and the second half hour will be an open agenda item. I do ask that topics discussed need to be general and not about specific incidents. Note from Dr. Anderson: This Thursday, February 7, 2019, students from the BHS Hope Group will be providing our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders a presentation on vaping. The BHS Hope Group will be supported by their Student Assistance Counselor. This presentation is a continuation from our parent forum a few weeks back. BMS Spotlight on Learning: This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on our entire BMS Learning Community for your cooperation during last week’s lockdown drill. Nearly every door was locked and all students were quiet and met our lock down expectations. On behalf of Mrs. Bulk and myself, we can’t thank our teachers/staff/students enough for making our student’s safety our number one priority! BMS Enrichment Update: The following programs are the final enrichment programs that will be running this winter: Mondays: Google Sketchup in Room 202 Tuesdays: Drums in the Band room and woodworking (full) Thursdays: Photography in Room 11 If you do not see your chosen enrichment class, it may have been cancelled due to low enrollment. Questions? Please email Mrs. Texeira at [email protected]. From the BMS Library: Meg Medina’s “Merci Suárez Changes Gears,” is the 2019 Newbery Medal winner. To quote Booklist’s starred review, “Medina's breathtaking coming-of-age story features a strong, deeply honest protagonist whose insights will make readers laugh, as well as dynamic secondary characters who reveal glimmers of profound depth. Medina capably gets to the heart of middle-school experiences in this engrossing story of a kid growing into herself.” In this topical novel, cultures collide for Merci when she starts sixth grade at her posh private school. A scholarship student, things are quite different for her. She lives in a modest, multigenerational home while most of the other kids enjoy big homes and fancy boats. Then Merci manages to get into the crosshairs of bossy Edna Santos who has her sights on the new boy who just happens to be Merci's school-assigned Sunshine Buddy. Life gets even more complicated when Merci’s beloved grandfather starts acting strangely and no one will tell her why. Widely recognized, ”Merci Suárez Changes Gears” is also on the May is Rhode Island Latino Books Month Award List. You can see the full list at: The 2019 Book List. Encourage your student/s to check out this book and others from the list for great reading during February break. ~ Mrs. Maddocks Free/Reduced Lunch: The Barrington Public Schools want to make sure that we are capturing all of our eligible free and reduced breakfast and lunch students.
