Barrington Middle School BMS Connected Learning Newsletter 5.13.2019 The BMS Learning Community is Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Succeed! Upcoming Events: (Note: Please review the dates as dates are subject to change due to a number of factors from one newsletter to the next).
BMS Spotlight on Learning: This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on 8th Grade Students Christopher Clyne, Perry Davis, Evana Hernandez, Courtney Brady, and Helen Copple for participating in this year’s Letters About Literature competition. Christopher and Perry tied for 3rd place, and Evana, Courtney and Helen were honorable mentions. Out of 237 submissions to the Letters About Literature National Contest, five of our BMS student letters won 3rd place or Honorable Mention for the state of Rhode Island. Great work students! This week we also would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Urbonas and her Spanish classes. Inspired by the RULER Mood Meter, Mrs. Urbonas created a Spanish version on the wall of her classroom bringing emotion vocabulary to life. Well done Mrs. Urbonas! This week we would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight on our Girls and Boys Track Teams. Our Boys AND Girls track teams both came in 1st place yesterday at the Divisional meet and are now Eastern Division State Champs! Great work team! Finally, this week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Chef Anna. Chef Anna regularly goes out of her way to meet the needs of our students and faculty/staff. Thank you Anna for being such an amazing and caring chef! BMS New Information: Students Sending/Responding Mass Emails: It has been our practice here at BMS not to allow students to send or respond to mass emails. The purpose of email is for students to collaborate and communicate with group members and teachers for educational purposes. Our stance has been, and will continue to be, not to send emails out to groups bigger than 4 individuals. Anything larger than 4 is considered a “mass” email and would first need administrative approval. Over the past week we have made repeated announcements to students, sent emails, had individual conversations, as well as issued consequences for students who have not complied with our practice. It would be incredibly helpful if you could reinforce this message at home. As always, please let me know if you have any questions. Device Free Evening: Thursday, May 16, 2019, Barrington will once again participate in a community wide Device Free Evening. Please see the supporting link with additional information on how to take a break from technology! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NO8Uzo2Q0WU7JVePI7MSl5NU_OkRhHHO-XDGzAocYe4/edit?usp=sharing BMS Yearbooks: The sale period for yearbooks from October 2018 to April 2019 is now closed as our yearbook producer must now begin manufacture of our books to get them here for the end of school. If you did not order but would still like to purchase a yearbook, there may be a few extras available on a first come, first served basis. If you would like to be considered for any extras, please submit your name at this link. We will email you with payment information towards the middle of June if we are able to provide you with one. Volunteer Opportunity: Volunteers are needed for the BHS Senior Project “Pitchfest” on June 5th from 7:50 am to 10:50 am. BHS is preparing for their Senior Project Pitchfest for the class of 2020. Five parent volunteers from each school are needed to sit on the panels. Please click here for more information. 2019 - 2020 Schedule: As indicated in Mr. Messore’s recent newsletter, Barrington Middle School will tentatively be starting at 8:40 am (students in their homeroom seats) and be dismissed at 3:10 pm. Please know that these times may adjust slightly. In addition, it is also important for me to note that students participating in before school band programs will continue to be afforded the same opportunity next year despite the change in schedule. In addition, students will also be able to participate in after school sports/clubs/activities as well. For more information, please see Mr. Messore’s Frequently Asked Question notice sent out last week. https://drive.google.com/file/d/165W2xtuv1YJNM2jh-ULy9tq1cPPUx_xe/view?usp=sharing BMS Old Information: Bike Safety: As the weather gets warmer, we are bound to have more and more bikers riding to school. There are times where we have counted nearly 300 bikes! With that said, it is important for us to review bike safety to and from school:
Car Safety: As the weather gets warmer, there will be more and more bikes riding to school. We cannot stress enough to take extra caution during drop off and pickup time. Please be sure to be mindful when pulling into the parking lot for walkers and bikers, and when pulling out of the parking lot, please look twice. Unfortunately, last year we did have an accident with a car and biker (note: student was okay but very shaken). One Amazing Night: We can’t believe One Amazing Night is right around the corner! Please join us at Barrington Middle School from 5:00pm - 7:00pm on Thursday, May 23, 2019 for a celebration of all things BMS. Families will be able to enjoy food, music performed by BMS student performance groups, giant obstacle course, badminton, academic showcase, as well as demonstrations in our STEAM Studio and Woodshop. Please note that this is not a drop off event. Students must be in attendance with an adult. Chromebook Care:
Remind: Remind is a communication platform that helps schools and districts reach and engage with their communities. Because it is a texting system, important last minute notices such as late buses, early releases, etc can get out quickly. To help with communication, each week I have been releasing the BMS Building Project Blog. You can access the blog by visiting the BMS Building Project Homepage or the direct link to the BMS Building Project Blog. In addition, each Tuesday morning we will have a student volunteer give updates to our student body during morning announcements. BMS Spotlight on Learning: This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Alison Pomeranz. Over the past two weeks, Mrs. Pomeranz has been working with a small group of students offering them an opportunity to paint various scenes and portraits after school. Painting provides students with an opportunity to explore and decrease stress and anxiety. Well done Mrs. Pomeranz. This week we would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Lori Dalessio and Mrs. Diana Ouellette. Last week, Mrs. Dalessio and Mrs. Ouellette volunteered to cover for a teacher who was absent and assist with the administration of RICAS. Thank you Lori and Diana! BMS New Information: Visit from Commissioner Infante-Green: Commissioner Infante-Green will be visiting Barrington Middle School on Monday, April 29, 2019. Monday, April 29, 2019 will be the Commissioner’s first day on the job and Barrington Middle School will be the first school that she visits. BMS is honored to have Commissioner Infante-Green and we are excited for her to see our learning community and see teaching and learning built on Deep Learning principles. Commissioner Infante-Green will be visiting Mr. Mark Davis, Mrs. Becky Henderson, Ms. Abbruzzi, and hear from Blue Cluster teachers and students. Simultaneously, a national reporter from the Hechinger Report will also be visiting to learn more about BMS’s approach on teaching and learning. This is a true honor to have the Commissioner visit as well as a national reporter to learn more about what we do on a daily basis. BMS Old Information: Chromebook Care:

Note from Dr. Anderson: Dear Students, This week you will begin our State’s RICAS Assessment. I know that the very word, “assessment” can cause a bit of stress and anxiety for some, as well as, for others, may seem like an unimportant mundane task. These feelings are typical and normal. This testing season, I want you to approach each assessment with a mindset of “show what you know.” Think of these assessments as an opportunity to celebrate how much you have learned over this past year. Each of you have worked so incredibly hard this year and your teachers, your parents, Mrs. Bulk and I are very proud of you. Throughout the year you have demonstrated high levels of engagement, grit, problem solving skills, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity. You are ready! All that I ask is that you give your personal best! Prior to each assessment, take a deep breath and, if you feel compelled, repeat the following: “I am excited to show what I know.” Sincerely, Dr. Anderson BMS Spotlight on Learning: This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Jaime Poirier for her leadership and organization of this year’s 7th Grade college visit, and our 7th Grade Teachers for your support! The week prior to vacation, Mrs. Poirier and the 7th Grade clusters visited Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI to learn about educational options post high school. Students had an opportunity to tour the campus, learn about various educational/career opportunities, as well as interact with college students. Thank you Mrs. Poirier and 7th Grade teachers for making this trip possible! BMS New Information: Chromebook Care:
BMS Old Information: RICAS and New Science Assessment Testing Window: Cluster Preference and Student Information Forms: Due to an anticipated busier summer (moving into the new building), we will be beginning our scheduling process much earlier this year. One of the first important pieces of information is the cluster preference responses from families. Like last year, once cluster assignments have been made, we will not be able to make any adjustments. Due to varying needs, approximately 60% of preferences are fulfilled. Please see the linked forms for incoming 7th and 8th grade parent/guardian to complete by Friday, April 26, 2019. (note: incoming 6th grade forms will be emailed out after the parent orientation and due a few weeks after that). Incoming 7th Grade Information: Incoming 7th Grade families are able to identify their preference for cluster experience (looping or single year), and not their preference for a particular custer. 2019 - 2020 7th Grade BMS Cluster Experience/Program Preference Form and Student Information Incoming 8th Grade Information: Incoming 8th Grade families are able to identify their preferred allied art experiences. Students leaving Orange or Razz will be placed on a single year experience. Students in Red will remain in Red.
